چکیده

1. INTRODUCTION Because of the apparent importance of dynamic and thermodynamic properties of RFDs to tornadogenesis, these are studied for a variety of prescribed environments using a 1.5-dimension downdraft model. The spatial dimensionality of this model is purposely less than three so as to simplify analyses and to focus on vertical processes, which are thought to be of primary importance. Moreover, prescribed environments are used so as to span a wide range of conditions that both incorporate the range of perceived possible RFD environments and to illustrate different modes of modeled RFD behavior. A description of the model is provided next, followed by a description of prescribed environments, results, discussion, and conclusions.

An observational and idealized numerical examination of low-level counter-rotating vortices in the rear flank of supercells

Observations are reviewed that show that the dominant kinematic elements of the supercell rear flank are a downdraft trailing an adjacent updraft, a gust front, and counter-rotating vortices embedded in the gust front convergence zone. The associated vortex lines are shaped like arches. In an idealized simulation of the evolution of this flow structure, vortex rings are observed to form around ...

The tempest unmanned aircraft system for in situ observations of tornadic supercells: Design and VORTEX2 flight results

This paper reports results from field deployments of the Tempest Unmanned Aircraft System, the first of its kind of unmanned aircraft system designed to perform in situ sampling of supercell thunderstorms, including those that produce tornadoes. A description of the critical system components, consisting of the unmanned aircraft, ground support vehicles, communications network, and custom softw...

A comparison of the midlevel kinematic characteristics of a pair of supercell thunderstorms observed by airborne Doppler radar

The midlevel kinematic characteristics of two supercell thunderstorms observed during the Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment (VORTEX), one tornadic and the other nontornadic, are compared using airborne pseudo-dualDoppler wind retrievals. The most significant difference between the two cases was that a midlevel rear-inflow jet was observed in the nontornadic superce...

Microphysical and Dynamical Characteristics of Low-Precipitation and Classic Supercells

The sensitivity of supercell morphology to the vertical distribution of moisture is investigated in this study using a cloud-resolvingmodel with 300-mhorizontal grid spacing. Simulated storms are found to transition from classic (CL) to low-precipitation (LP) supercells when the strength of elevated dry layers in the environmental moisture profile is increased. Resulting differences in themicro...

A Numerical Simulation of Cyclic Mesocyclogenesis

A three-dimensional nonhydrostatic numerical model, the Advanced Regional Prediction System, is used to study the process of cyclic mesocyclogenesis in a classic supercell thunderstorm. During the 4-h simulation, the storm’s mesocyclone undergoes two distinct occlusions, with the beginning of a third indicated at the end of the simulation. The occlusion process exhibits a period of approximatel...
